Topic: Training and Learning - Models and Theories

Previous to 1989 - I felt that I had a healthy disrespect for Training "Theory". After all, I was a hard-nosed training practitioner - educated in the University of practical experience. At that point, I started down the road of achieving a Diploma and Masters Degree in Training in Development.

I found that the only way that I could fit my study commitments in with the demands of my work, was to ensure that every assignment I carried out was linked to my own work. And so I began to deepen my understanding of practical training by examining some of the seminal training/learning models and theories - such as Kolb and Honey's Learning models, Knowles views on Adult learning, various models of motivation etc. What I came to realise was that:

  • A really good learning theory/model is one of the most practical tools available to the trainer in organising and delivering his/her training

  • There aren't too many models/theories around - there are lots of derivatives, but I just keep coming back to the seminal works

So, I hope you enjoy this page of links to many of the wonderful web pages on Training Theories/Models out there.
Mike Collins.
