Topic: Training Needs Analysis and Assessment.

So - you know the situation; Maybe you have just come into a company of 600 persons. There is lots of ad-hoc on-site and off-site training in place. Money is being spent on training - both technical and soft-skills. But, where do you start in managing the direction of the training initiatives?

How can you align them and ensure that they are happening for a reason? Both at an individual, team and organisational level? The wonderful world of training needs analysis offers some of the answers to these questions (but often leaves out the politics, cultural preferences involved as you seek to change the world...). I have found that there are two major "watch-its" when it comes to this phase in Systematic Training:

  • It can lead to over-expectation. There is never enough time or money to carry out all of the training required - so a major part of the Training Professional's job is in managing this expectation.

  • The learner often thinks they know what they need/want - but are often misinformed. So, the training professional needs to keep the training needs questions focused on the need, as opposed to the perceived solution.

The following links and downloads will provide you with a wealth of tools, case-studies and theories for approaching this tricky phase of the Systematic Training Process.

Enjoy. Mike Collins.
